  • Co-Chair of the Competition and International Trade Law Groups and partner in the Energy Law Group. Member of the firm's Board of Partners, 2001–2007 and 2017.
  • Trade law experience includes NAFTA, WTO, AIT and other trade agreement matters (most recently the redesign of the wine retailing and distribution framework in Ontario); anti-dumping and subsidy proceedings (most recently drywall anti-dumping in western Canada and the related reference proceeding on Canada's economic, trade and competition interests); export/import controls (including the settlement of a $33 million ascertained forfeiture order and related criminal proceedings involving shipments by a Quebec exporter to Middle East countries for $50,000); trade sanctions (including Cuba issues under the Foreign Extraterritorial Measures Act); and investor-state disputes under NAFTA and bilateral investment treaties (including representation of the Canadian auto producers and importers as interested parties in the Ethyl NAFTA chapter 11, AIT and constitutional challenges to the Manganese-Based Fuel Additives Act).
  • Competition law experience includes merger clearances under the Competition Act and the Investment Canada Act (e.g. the recent sale of the Canadian Wheat Board to a joint venture controlled by a Saudi Arabian SOE); assisting companies to respond to investigations under the criminal and civil provisions in the Competition Act; and related litigation and advisory work.
  • Energy law experience includes serving as the Chair of the Ontario Energy Board's Market Surveillance Panel (2007-12), assisting the Independent Electricity System Operator to develop the General Conduct Rule for wholesale market participants, and advising clients on electricity market issues.
  • Represented clients in matters before the Federal, Ontario and British Columbia courts as well as the Canadian International Trade Tribunal, Canada Border Services Agency, Competition Bureau, Competition Tribunal and other agencies.
  • Public policy experience includes advising the CRTC on foreign ownership issues in merger transactions; appearances before parliamentary committees; submissions to Canadian and United States government agencies on competition law reforms; and co-founding the Merger Streamlining Group which has made over 30 submissions to foreign governments regarding the design of merger review regimes.
