In the Spring of 2016, the Government created a special advisory panel to better address offshore tax evasion and aggressive tax planning.  The panel recently released a report recommending changes to the Canada Revenue Agency’s Voluntary Disclosures Program that would restrict the ability of taxpayers to make valid voluntary disclosures that relate to offshore holdings.  Michael Friedman, the head of McMillan’s National Tax Practice, commented on the federal Voluntary Disclosures Program in the wake of the recommended changes in the Financial Post.
