Joan Young has been appointed as a member of the Advisory Committee to the Judicial Council of British Columbia. This Committee is an important component of the decision-making process for appointing new Provincial Court judges. The Committee's task is to help the Judicial Council of British Columbia assess applicants for the Provincial Court Bench. The Advisory Committee makes reports on all applicants who apply for a position with the Provincial Court and is the primary source of information for assessing the suitability of applicants, as well as, the primary source of information for deciding whether or not the Judicial Council will grant an interview.

Joan has been a member of the Canadian Bar Association since 1990 and held the role of Provincial Council Member from 2009-2012. A past-Chair of the CBA (B.C. Branch) Civil Litigation Sub-section, she is currently Vice-Chair of the CBA (B.C. Branch) Civil Litigation Sub-section and Treasurer of the Aboriginal Law Sub-section.
