The Canadian Food Inspection Agency’s Food Labelling Modernization Initiative: Phase III Discussion Paper and Questionnaire Launches

December 2016 Marketing and Advertising Bulletin < 1 read

As part of its Food Labelling Modernization initiative, on December 1, 2016 the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) launched a discussion paper and questionnaire seeking stakeholder feedback on food labelling proposals including modernizing regulations and establishing a risk-based approach to ensuring truthful food labelling.  The discussion paper and questionnaire solicits input and provides information in a number of areas, including background on the purpose of food labelling regulations and food compositional standards, and specific proposals to modernize regulations and establish a new approach for consumer values claims that appear on food labels.

The questionnaire builds on the CFIA’s prior phases of engagement in connection with the Food Labelling Modernization initiative.  Specifically, the phase I engagement (2013-2014) sought input on issues in four key areas of food labelling: roles, responsibilities and partnerships; regulations; policy and program development, and service delivery.  Phase II of the consultation (2014-2015), sought feedback on ideas and options to modernize Canada’s food labelling system.  The phase III discussion paper and online questionnaire is available for completion until February 28, 2017.  A summary of the Food Labelling Modernization initiative consultation process to date is also available on the CFIA website.
