Canadian Satellite Radio awarded licence to offer XM satellite radio service in Canada
On June 16, 2005, in a historical decision, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) granted Canadian Satellite Radio and its partner XM Satellite Radio of Washington, D.C. a broadcasting licence to deliver commercial-free music and premier news, sports, talk and entertainment to Canadians from coast-to-coast-to-coast. XM Satellite Radio is the No. 1 satellite radio service in the U.S. with more than four million subscribers. “These licences will harness new technologies for Canadians and give Canadian talent exposure to listeners across Canada and indeed, North America…through new Canadian channels and airplay on U.S. channels,” said CRTC chairperson Charles Dalfen.
