McMillan’s Executive Partner Tim Murphy, Talks Prefix Law in Secured Lender’s Innovation Issue

The Secured Lender celebrated innovation in the commercial finance industry as part of their January/February edition. The Innovation Issue featured McMillan’s executive partner Tim Murphy who led the establishment of Prefix Law, the firm’s in-sourced “no overhead” LPO. Tim Murphy is an Executive Partner at McMillan LLP, one of Canada’s leading business law firms.  He is also Managing Director of McMillan Vantage, a public affairs consultancy.  As a member of the firm’s four-person Executive Committee, he leads the firm’s innovation initiatives, including a strategic alliance with IBM on data analytics and the hiring of a data scientist to produce pricing and staffing templates.

He also led the establishment of an in-sourced “no overhead” LPO at McMillan, known as Prefix Law.  He is currently working on improving and expanding the firm’s technology interface with clients, including the use of AI.  As a lawyer, Tim’s practice focuses on transactions with a public component with a particular emphasis on project finance, infrastructure, energy and public private partnerships.

Tim also brings extensive experience in the public sector. Formerly Chief of Staff to the Prime Minister of Canada, Tim provided strategic advice and direction to the Cabinet, the Prime Minister and to senior levels of the public service. His public sector experience also includes serving as Chief of Staff to the Finance Minister of Canada, as a Member of Provincial Parliament in Ontario and as a strategic advisor to governments at all levels. Tim is ranked in Projects by Chambers Global, PLC Which Lawyer and in Project Finance by Who’s Who Legal, the Legal 500 Canada, Canadian Legal Lexpert and IFLR 1000.

Tim serves on a variety of public and public sector boards, including Morguard Corp, Legal Aid Ontario and the Canadian National Institute for the Blind GTA Advisory Board.  He is also an adjunct professor at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law in the JD and LLM courses in the Law and Policy of Public Private Partnerships and a frequent commentator on public policy and legal issues.  He is the author/editor of Construction Law in Canada.
