Laurie Wright is an esteemed lawyer sought after for her expertise in public law, including constitutional, administrative, human rights and Aboriginal law. She skillfully leverages her 30 years of experience in the federal government to provide thoughtful and practical advice to clients on complex and consequential legal and policy matters.

Laurie works on a wide variety of files with an impact on the business environment including impact assessments, human rights, Indigenous rights, climate change, natural resources development and pipelines, sanctions, economic security matters and anti-corruption. Her legal skills are complemented by her valued ability to help clients understand the government context they are working in. Laurie speaks the language of regulators and legislators, and helps clients to better position their communications and plans.

In her previous senior leadership roles with Canada’s Department of Justice, including as senior assistant deputy minister, Laurie developed legal policy and law reform initiatives and provided expert and specialized legal advice in the areas of administrative, constitutional and international law, privacy, human rights, and national security and criminal law. She was also responsible for the drafting of federal laws and regulations.

Laurie has also represented Canada’s interests with provinces and territories, with Indigenous Peoples, and internationally at the International Court of Justice, the OECD, the Commonwealth, and the UN Committee against Torture and the UN Human Rights Committee.

  • Advised Global Container Terminals on the proposed Deltaport Expansion Berth 4 project, addressing regulatory and environmental considerations
  • Advised the Association of Mineral Exploration on mineral exploration policy and development
  • Prepared the fourth independent review of the operations and governance of the Ombudsman for Life and Health Insurance
  • Advised a client in the garment industry on international human rights obligations
  • Advised a client in the industry on electric vehicle charging station requirements
  • Advised the federal Crown on the proposed secure administrative review proceedings under the Canada Evidence Act
  • Advised the federal Crown on the Transmountain Pipeline expansion
  • Advised the federal Crown on impact assessment including the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012 and the Impact Assessment Act
  • Advised the federal Crown on remediation agreements
  • Advised the federal Crown on sanctions laws
  • Advised the federal Crown on various matters involving reconciliation with Indigenous peoples including the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples
  • Advised the federal Crown on responsible enterprise
